Clock-Ins Are Records. Accountability Takes More.

Every organisation has an attendance register, and almost every organisation knows some of it is fiction. A colleague signs for a friend who's running late. Someone clocks in from the bus. The register says everyone was there. The work says otherwise.

A record shouldn't be easy to fake

Paper registers and shared clock-in tablets record a claim, and claims are cheap. A useful attendance record answers three questions: was this person at the workplace, on their own device, at the time recorded? A geofenced system answers all three.

  • Clock-in only inside the geofence around the work location, checked on the staff member's own phone.
  • Device and session history on every record, so one phone can't clock in for three people.
  • Leave, shifts and payroll computed from the same data, instead of rebuilt from sheets each month.
  • Staff records, documents and contracts in one place, out of paper files and personal laptops.

Attendance is one number

A clean attendance record tells you who turned up. It says nothing about what they did once they arrived. So attendance should feed the appraisal. In a performance management system, staff set KPIs and review themselves, supervisors score and counter-sign, and HR moderates across departments so a 4 in finance means the same as a 4 in operations. Attendance becomes one input among several, visible to the person being appraised.

Presence without surveillance

Some staff object to location tracking, and they have a point. Geofencing only needs to know whether a phone was inside the boundary at clock-in, never where it went afterwards. Organisations that want to go further can use a zero-knowledge clock-in: the staff member's phone proves it was inside the geofence without sending its coordinates to anyone. The proof is generated in the browser with Noir and checked by a verifier, and the location never leaves the phone. I explain how in Prove It Without Showing It.

Where I've done this

Geofenced attendance runs in WeSelling, my own business software. The appraisal side comes from the platforms I built for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the National Identity Management Commission and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

A record proves someone was there. Accountability asks what happened next.

What it costs

HR & Geofenced Attendance starts at $720 and takes ten days. The Performance Appraisal System starts at $950. A private clock-in built with browser ZK proofs starts at $750.

Tell me about your business and I'll tell you what I'd build first: start here or book a free call.
